<p>The mental effects of carrying excess weight &#8211; and obesity &#8211; can often be disastrous. People with weight issues are often made fun of by others whose weight is considered &#8216;normal&#8217;. Jokes poking fun at overweight and obese people are common in our society. They often have to put up with a tirade of abuse and pyschological barbs in addition to not so subtle social denigrations. Because of this, they sometimes suffer from poor self-esteem and can feel inadequate. And to make things worse, they are looked upon as the source of their own problems.</p>

<p>Every day social situations are , or can be, embarrassing for those who are obese. Appearing in a beach or at public pools, because they wear clothes that are more revealing, tends to be an unpleasant occasion. If an overweight person decides to play competitive sports he will often undergo the disgrace of being the last ones chosen for teams.</p>
<p>Quite often, in school, obese or overweight children perform poorer academically than &#8216;normal&#8217; weight peers and have lower grade point averages. As young men and women, many times there is more difficulty gaining acceptance into college and securing jobs and future promotions. Hardly surprising, then, that such life experiences tend to lead to poor self esteem and self-confidence. So starts a cycle of social isolation, emotional withdrawal, depression, inactivity, more overeating, and further weight gain.</p>
<p>The distortion of body image and overall body discontent suffered by obese and overweight people are sometimes implicated in the growth of negative self-worth, so may act as risk factors toward depression not to mention abnormal eating patterns. One&#8217;s body image may be affected and partly caused by cultural values and beliefs regarding beauty and attractiveness.</p>
<p>Needless to say, there are some very simple things an obese or overweight person could do to improve his/her self-esteem. For starters they could seek advice from their medical doctor to determine how significant the problem is, or if there really is a problem at all. People vary and some of those who seem to be heavy whencompared to friends and family may just be within a normal range for themselves.</p>
<p>They should reduce the amount of TV watching. Not surprisingly, there&#8217;s a link between being overweight and watching television. The average person watches at least  3  hours of television every day, and guess what is the item most commonly featured product on TV? Food.  So guess the most likely thing people do when watching TV? They eat food.  Watching TV should be limited to a reasonable time, say a couple of hours, every day, as a maximum. In fact, television watching could be done while using home exercise equipment like treadmills and stationary bikes.</p>
<p>Those who are overweight must shoulder the responsibility to shield themselves from the harm, physical and pyschological brought about by being obese. By establishing patterns of healthy eating and exercising sensibly, they can conquer the challenge of being overweight, so that they can live and enjoy life and not be weighted down by being larger than the &#8216;normal&#8217;  size.</p>

<p>Your body mass index is another important indicator of heart disease risk. Strive to maintain your body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9 for optimal health.</p>
<p>Excess weight can place additional force on your joints, particularly on your knees, hips, and lower back.  Because of this extra pressure, the cartilage, which is the tissue that cushions and protects the joints, gradually wears away, causing a form of arthritis known as osteoarthritis. Over the years, the damage to the joint may be so extensive that the joint must be replaced surgically.</p>
<p>This type of injury is lasting and irreversible.  Tendinitis, or swelling of the tendons, is also widespread among those who are overweight. Tendons, particularly the Achilles tendon that extends from the calf to the heel, could swell and get irritated even just from walking.  Losing weight decreases the stress on your joints and tendons and reduces wear and tear. Losing weight can also ease the aching and swelling caused by osteoarthritis.</p>
<p>Now if a person is overweight the excessive fat in the abdominal cavity increases the pressure inside it. This causes the contents of the stomach to travel up into the gullet. Loss of weight reduces stomach acid reflux.</p>
<p>Those who are fat usually don&#8217; t think much of themselves. Low self-esteem can affect many different aspects of health and behaviour such as social adjustment, activity engagement, and goal direction. Being picked-on is a very cruel thing and it can severely hurt the self-esteem.</p>
<p>People who are overweight know they have a problem. They understand that their figure or shape is not what it is supposed to be. They also know that they eat more than they should.</p>
<p>The problem is that they may not know how to stop this conduct. Food consoles them. They might consider themselves useless since they cannot overcome their weight issues.</p>
<p>But then, they might not have the necessary equipment and the much needed encouragement. They might be around people who have no problems with their weight and really cannot understand or relate to what they are going through.</p>
<p>These are only a small number of ways that excess weight can harmfully influence the well-being of a person. The good news is that society is becoming increasingly aware of the problem of being overweight and how to get help for it.</p>

Diabetics need diet programs that keep blood sugars from moving up and down too much. As a result experts developed a method to calculate how a specific food influences blood sugar. The Glycemic Index ranks carbohydrate foods by assigning them a number ranging from  0 to 100. The figure specifies the speed at which the food increases blood sugar levels during its absorption. The more elevated the rate is, the faster glucose is taken up.</p>

<p>A high Glycemic Index food has a value of 70 and above. A GI value of 56-69 is considered medium and any foods lower than 55 are considered a low Glycemic Index food. Foods with a minimal GI rate are excellent since they absorb more spontaneously and give a balanced source of energy for extended hours, giving you a sense of fullness for lengthy periods of time.</p>
<p>However, the major difficulty with the GI diet is that there isn&#8217;t a clear-cut rate fixed for every existing food.  There are numerous websites that provide rates for a particular food, but the figures provided are pretty much far-flung from one another. It is never clear where the numbers come from.</p>
<p>One more concern with the Glycemic Index is that the rates don&#8217;t suggest what to do with the wide spread combining of different foods in a meal .  People do not eat individual foods one at a time, especially in the unusually large amounts used in research. The effect of the whole meal is more important than the GI of each individual food in the meal. Fats and protein decelerates absorption of food. The glycemic index does not take that into account at all, nor does it account for differences in each person&#8217;s digestion or different food preparation methods.</p>
<p>For all the effort a GI diet requires, there is little apparent pay-off in terms of improved weight control. The Glycemic Index diet has not been shown to affect weight loss, despite the belief that controlling blood sugar will control appetite and insulin, and therefore control food intake and fat storage.</p>
<p>However, in spite of everything, a lot of doctors concur that the GI diet, if used accurately, could be an excellent method in losing weight, particularly to those who battle with typical low-calorie diets or weight watchers who have a hard time restraining their desire for food.</p>
<p>The Glycemic Index Diet is like the low-carbohydrate diet, although not as rigorous, and aims at the kind of carbohydrates, not the amount of carbs in every food.  There is also a focus on the correct timing of the two basic types of meals, a carb meal or protein meal.</p>
<p>The GI diet is a fantastic option to those who want to look after their blood glucose levels, or those who are obese, have type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, and those who desire to shed off those extra pounds of weight without delay.</p>
<p>While it is more of an approach in food consumption than a weight loss program, a lot of people use the GI method to accomplish their objectives in removing extra weight</p>
